Some Types Of Chemotherapy Can Cause Severe Side Effects

Various types of chemotherapy are employed for different types of cancer such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and even blood cancer like leukemia. The strength of the drug determines the main classification of chemotherapy treatment while how the drug is administered into the bloodstream determines the secondary classification. All chemotherapy drugs are powerful and strong to be able to destroy the unwanted cancerous growth cells before these cells destroy the body. There are those drugs that are even more powerful such as those used to fight leukemia that resulted in the body requiring a bone marrow transplant.

Short sessions are used to carry out the most common types of chemotherapy treatment. Usually, there is a period of around six weeks between each session. This will allow the body to have ample opportunity to recover from each bout of treatment. At the same time, the physicians will also have enough time to determine the effectiveness of the treatment before administering the next one. Only one solitary drug or a combination of drugs to attack different cells may be used in a treatment. Tubes are normally inserted under the skin to get the drug into the bloodstream as quickly as possible intravenously .

Almost every patient will experience some side effects caused by the powerful drugs which are used to treat most forms of cancer. This is due to the inability of the drugs to discriminate between harmful cells and the good ones required by the body. This inevitably will result in some disruptions to bodily systems. Frequently, it will take up to six months for the patient to fully recover from a course of treatment. In some rare cases, it may take even longer.

If the standard dose chemotherapy treatment used to treat most ordinary cancer can cause such disruptions to the body, imagine how hazardous it will be with the high dose treatments which are required for treating leukemia. As this type of chemotherapy is incredibly destructive to the body, it is a last resort forms of chemotherapy treatment as the leukemia patient has little or no hope of survival. The drugs will adversely affect the legitimate blood cells so much that a bone marrow transplant will be required at the end. As such, a long recovery period will be needed.

Different types of chemotherapy will affect the body in different ways and to varying degrees. The condition of the patient before therapy also plays an important part. If they already have a weakened constitution or immune system before therapy, the effects of the treatment will be far more keenly felt. However, defeating the cancer is the main focus even if there are severe side effects. There is no other alternative to that. Sometimes milder drugs are used to control the side effects while the patient receives the right types of chemotherapy.
