Treatment For Breast Cancer

Advances in the treatment for breast cancer has reached to a level where breast removal is definitely considered as a last resort. Nowadays, much can be done for the patient before we reach to a point where we consider this drastic step. The success rate of chemotherapy breast cancer treatments is very encouraging, so much so that they should be attempted before contemplating any other solutions. However, there are side effects, which vary substantially from patient to patient, to be endured.

If you are worried about the thought of undergoing breast cancer chemo treatment, the best you can do is to research the subject so you understand exactly what is happening within your own body. Cancer is caused by cells which divide at far too fast a rate, way beyond the rate needed to replace dying cells. Exactly what causes this to happen is not yet known, although there are theories regarding diet and electromagnetic radiation. The breast cancer chemotherapy treatment you undergo is designed to kill off these excess cells.

When the breast cancer chemotherapy drugs are injected into the body, they fight all cells which are dividing and replicating growth. This inevitably means that some positive and useful cells are destroyed along with the cancerous ones, but this simply cannot be avoided. It is the need to kill off the cancerous cells which is paramount. Two distinctly different strategies can be employed here. The first is to try to use the drug to kill off the cancer completely. For this to be successful, treatment will need to continue over an extended period of time, and allow sufficient rest between each bout of treatment.

The other strategy which can be successfully employed is to try to reduce the tumor in size so that surgery can be used to remove it completely. This has the advantage that the body will subjected to far less of the drug which can cause it so much wear, fatigue, and damage. Against this, you have to weigh up the fact that surgery itself places a lot of stress and strain on the body, and the fact that the cancer is more likely to return later if the breast cancer chemotherapy drugs do not kill it completely.

Choosing which type of treatment for breast cancer to endure can be difficult. Consult with your physician and be sure that you have made the right choice before you commit to anything. Consider whether you would sooner commit to a longer term of treatment and avoid the prospect of surgery, or whether you would prefer to have one important surgical operation which will then leave you free to get back to your normal life. Only you can know which is your right treatment for breast cancer.
